Dear Samantha Mabry and A Fierce and Subtle Poison,
Doesn’t this book look magical?
Everyone knows the legends about the cursed girl–Isabel, the one the senoras whisper about. They say she has green skin and grass for hair, and she feeds on the poisonous plants that fill her family’s Caribbean island garden. Some say she can grant wishes; some say her touch can kill.Seventeen-year-old Lucas lives on the mainland most of the year but spends summers with his hotel-developer father in Puerto Rico. He’s grown up hearing stories about the cursed girl, and he wants to believe in Isabel and her magic. When letters from Isabel begin mysteriously appearing in his room the same day his new girlfriend disappears, Lucas turns to Isabel for answers–and finds himself lured into her strange and enchanted world. But time is running out for the girl filled with poison, and the more entangled Lucas becomes with Isabel, the less certain he is of escaping with his own life.
A Fierce and Subtle Poison beautifully blends magical realism with a page-turning mystery and a dark, starcrossed romance–all delivered in lush, urgent prose.
Here are my reasons why I want to read this book:
-
I need to hear more about the legends of the cursed girl! So she has green skin and grass for hair? Feeds on poisonous plants? Rumored to grant wishes? Her touch can possibly kill? Excuse me for repeating what’s in the first paragraph of the synopsis, but that is so intriguing! How did this legend start? Who is Isabel, the cursed girl? What is the real story? I need to know.
-
It has magic. Isabel yields some kind of power. Wishing granting, but is that all? There is definitely something more to Isabel than meets the eye. I can’t wait to see what kind of magic lines this book.
-
I want to see how Isabel and Lucas’s relationship develops. I’m not looking for the romance; I’m interested more in how Isabel and Lucas start to rely to each other because of the circumstances they find themselves in. They find each other because Lucas finds her letters, and from there, what happens? Why does her letters appear in the first place? What is their relationship? Tell me!
- I want to know about the strange world that Isabel lives in. I’m sure it’s beyond imagination because of magical realism. I expect trippiness and unexpected weirdness to enter my brain when I read this. And once I’ve gotten a taste of the world, I bet I’ll be just as enchanted as Lucas.
I will be off to request this.
Who else is excited about this book?
Whaaat. Magical realism. Set in PUERTO RICO, which in literature almost always gets overlooked for its neighboring islands. I’m so in.
Hmm this does sound magical! I do like the cover and its color scheme as well. Anddddd now I’m REALLY intrigued about this Isabel characters and how (and WHY) her letters get into Lucas’s hands… hmm. Yes. Yes, I think I shall read this one. :D
I really, really, really like this cover! I absolutely adore it. And I think the story sounds pretty damn fantastic too! Can’t wait to read this one :)
Yes! This sounds like such a good book.
This sounds absolutely magical! I love how Isabel’s introduced, too. I reeeeally should be looking to shrink my wishlist instead of growing it… but what’s willpower, am I right? ><;;
The cover looks so gorgeous! And the blurb sounds so magical. Girl with green skin and grass for hair whose touch could kill? I’M IN!
