FROM PANEL TO PANEL • What He Wouldn’t Do for Sweetpea (Demon Volume 2 by Jason Shiga)

February 6, 2017 Leave a Comment

[note note_color=”#bf94e4″ text_color=”#ffffff”]WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT READ VOLUME 1. GO READ DEMON VOLUME 1 (and here’s why you should). [/note]

Jimmy Yee’s on the run.

With the knowledge of what he can do—being able to possess the nearest person when his body dies—Jimmy has to do everything he can to escape the OSS, a government agency who’s hunting him down, but when he discovers something that changes his priorities, he’ll move Heaven and Earth—more like kill everybody in his way—for this new purpose in life.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT DEMON VOLUME 2

 • If you haven’t read Demon Volume 1, do it right now.

If you haven’t, turn around and grab Demon Volume 1 because that Volume 1 introduces you to this world and the crazy things Jimmy Yee can do just by dying. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be officially caught up and will not be surprised by the shit that goes on in Volume 2.

 • Jimmy has no regard for human life.

As someone who can’t die, he has no regard for his or people’s lives. Why should he care about innocent lives he’s killing? It’s all a means to an end, and his end is to escape the clutches of the OSS. He’ll kill a million people if that meant he is free and his loved ones are safe. Jimmy is the most selfish, yet fascinating person in the world. He knows what he wants.

 • Jimmy learns about what happened to his family.

Jimmy’s family died in a car accident, but that’s the extent of what we know. But what happened exactly? Close your ears and eyes if you don’t want to hear this because holy spoilers!
I couldn’t exactly have this bulletpoint go, “Jimmy Yee learns his daughter’s alive!” That’s right! His precious Sweetpea is alive and well, and is a demon like Jimmy. That moment when they finally meet made my heart soar. Jimmy has a new purpose in life: to protect his Sweetpea.
• Jimmy has plans.

When Jimmy has a goal, he’ll never stop until he reaches it. He’s tactical. When one plan fails, he has another one and another one and another one—like the bodies he can possess. He won’t rest until he’s not being hunted.

 • Readers (and Jimmy) learn about Project Azazel.

It all started in the 1940s, where two brilliant scientists decided to create demon assassins with a demonizer to help win wars, but of course somebody had alternative plans for their own purpose. This project revealed a lot of background on what a demon is and its purpose, and what the OSS plans to do.

 • It’s still addicting, funny, and gruesome as ever.

Once you get a taste, you won’t be able to put down this graphic novel. I know I couldn’t! I finished this volume in a matter of hours, and I needed more.

Who will love this comic? Readers who like reading really dark and morbid graphic novels. Not for the faint of heart. Horror-mystery lovers. Readers who read Volume 1.
