SINCERELY, CEE | A letter from yours truly to Liars, Inc by Paula Stokes

Dear Paula Stokes and Liars, Inc,

Liar, liar, pants are on fire.
It all starts with one little lie…

Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell lies to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts a business providing forged permission slips and cover stories for the students of Vista Palisades High. Liars, Inc. they call it. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?

When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.

Can Max find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit?
Let me tell you why I need this book:

 • Lies, you say? Instantly intrigued! I admit, I’m not the greatest of liars (I’m sure I have a tell) nor do I tell a lot of lies, so people who are able to do it well intrigue me. Reading about Max’s dislike for the truth fascinates me. Why? What happened to make him not a fan of the truth? What has it ever done to him? This book is just wrapped up in a ball of lies, which I’m sure will have me trying to guess what’s the truth and what’s the lie.

 • Selling lies as entertainment and a business. I want to read about the lies he comes up with. I bet he’s a convincing liar, and if he is, then Max really turned a talent into a lucrative career. It’s clever. You gotta do what you do best. If that’s lying? Well, then, you kind of have to applaud his ambition even if it’s quite questionable.

 • Friendships! I hope the book describes in detail the friendship between Max, Preston, and Parvati. I just love these pals starting something together. It makes me interested to see what role they play in Liars, Inc and in each other’s lives.

 • A murder-mystery? OH MY GOD. YES. Well, I’m not rooting for murders to happen, but I love this spin to the story. I initially thought it was a regular contemporary about the main character getting caught up in his lies, but a murder? SO MUCH IS AT STAKE, AND I AM EXCITED. What happened to Preston? What clues point to Max? Who really killed Preston? I’m expecting twists and turns, and “I never saw that coming” moments! I need it all!

 • That cover is magical. I’ve discussed why I loveeeee this book cover in Holy, Mother Cover when I showcased books with shoes on the front cover, but it needs to be said again! I love the shadow of a person in the rainwater. It’s like an invisible person, walking about. It’s creepy and a cool effect.

So, have you added this book to your TBR list?

Sincerely,

cee
