MUSIC TO MY (Y)EAR • 2018

January 21, 2019 Leave a Comment

Music in 2018 was filled with Arctic Monkeys, KPOP, and superhero movie soundtracks. Nothing else really.

With every passing year, I seem to be listening less and less albums, and more KPOP singles. To be fair though, a lot of my favorite artists didn’t release new albums this year, so I replayed a bunch of things I’ve listened to in the past—the xx, KPOP, and son so on.

Here are the albums I listened to. (It is in order of when I listened to them, and the links go to Spotify.)

ARCTIC MONKEYS | Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino

Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley, and Matt Helders.1 Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is their sixth studio album.

I’ve waited five long years for a new Arctic Monkeys album. I’ve spent these past years playing AM because that album is fucking iconic. There isn’t a time I’m not replaying it because y’know it’s my favorite album of all time.

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is so far from what you think is Arctic Monkey’s sound. It’s experimental, and takes on this loungey pop sound that works so beautifully. It’s odd—lyrics are very rambly—but it works well with this atmosphere Arctic Monkeys have conjured up with this album. The music sounds very futuristically-70s. I love it.

My Fave Songs: Four out of Five, Star Treatment, One Point Perspective, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino,

Comic Firsts
Comic Firsts, a feature where I talk about the first issues of comics that I’ve bought, received, or borrowed. It’s all about first impressions, what I like or didn’t like about the issue, and whether I would keep reading it beyond the first issue.
It has been a while since I’ve done a Comic Firsts post. I haven’t actually picked up a new comic. I’ve been distracted by my beloved The Wicked + The Divine to focus on anything, but the time is now to branch out into new titles!

I’ve had a dry spell with reading comics, but I’m back—at least, I’m hoping this is the beginning of my comeback! Gonna be talking about two deadly comics—Gunning for Hits and James Bond 007. ;)

BOOKS IN HAND • What Customers Bought in December 2018

January 9, 2019 Leave a Comment

You ever want to know what people are buying in bookstores? Well, it so happens that I work at one!

During the last week of February 2018, I pondered about what type of post to make for “Books in Hand.” At first, I planned to discuss all the books customers came in asking for or buying, but that’s a bit too much because everybody came in asking for different books, and I didn’t remember all of them. My boss showed me a way to check our store’s best selling books, and I found out what we sold a lot of!

And that’s what this post is—seeing the top ten selling books of December (tis the season!).

FICTION

Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin | The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho | There There by Tommy Orange | The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris | Elevation by Stephen King
