Inspired by What She ReadsPure Imagination Blog, and Stacked.

I admit I’m a book cover snob. Who isn’t though?

Book covers are the first thing that attracts readers to a book. A good cover can draw someone is, just as a bad cover can easily draw someone away. It can essentially make or break a book. Holy, Mother Cover! is where I showcase the book covers that stand out (or make me cringe), and discuss cover changes.

(A big special thanks to Georgie at What She Reads for bestowing me this fabulous name and to Charlotte at The Simple Tales for creating the beautiful feature banner you see before you.)

US vs UK: This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

What I love about the US cover of This Savage Song are: the font (which has a chalky-paint quality) and its loopiness, the violin outline that gives an opening to a city alleyway (as if saying that you can find the music there), and the orangey-red coloring. You just feel like something isn’t right.

I’m not as big of a fan of the UK cover of This Savage Song. It’s a bit too bare for me. However, the things I do like are the swirly ‘g’ in the title and the rose that looks like it’s been doused with some kind of liquid, and we’re seeing a snapshot of it. (Like, taken from a slow-mo video.)

Final Verdict: What cover do I like better? The hardcover!

Which cover design do you prefer? Would you buy the book for the US or the UK cover?

  1. I usually prefer UK covers, but in this case I like the US cover design a lot more!

I like the US edition more because of, like you mention, the chalky font! The UK cover reminds me of Jay Kristoff’s Nevernight.

I prefer the US edition! I generally prefer the US editions of books haha! XD

  4. Hi there, I discovered this post from the link you put on Pure Imagination and lemme say that I absolutely love your logo and header! So gorgeous <3 and I totally agree, a cover can make a big difference for me. I remember ransacking a bookstore trying to find a US cover of I'll Give You the Sun :') I much prefer the US cover of This Savage Songs, it's so mysterious and intriguing while the UK one is, as you said, a little bare. I'm currently doing V.E. Schwab marathon though, starting from A Darker Shade of Magic because I've been hearing so many rave reviews about her books! <3

The U.K. cover kind of uses the *classic vampire novel* script on the front too. While it is kind of a vampire novel… I think over all the U.S. cover suits the story better!

  6. I have to be the black sheep and go with the UK cover for this one! I think it looks cleaner and I love the rose imagery and simple color palette!

  7. Wow. I usually like UK versions better but in this case I like the US one.

  8. I definitely prefer the US cover! It’s so unique and haunting, and I think the atmosphere of the cover matches the atmosphere of the book really well. To me, the UK cover screams “paranormal romance!”, which. . . is really not indicative of the book at all.

  9. I like the US cover better, but the UK one isn’t bad either.

  10. I like the US cover a lot more! The UK one is so bare and I honestly would probably glance over it at first.

  11. I love the font from the US more, but the overall design from the UK is more appealing to me :)

For this particular book, I actually quite prefer the US cover (even though the UK one is very pretty too). I really like the way it incorporates elements and themes from the novel and it just looks so darn pretty :D
