Comic Firsts

Comic Firsts, a feature where I talk about the first issues of comics that I’ve bought, received, or borrowed. It’s all about first impressions, what I like or didn’t like about the issue, and whether I would keep reading it beyond the first issue.

A brand-new horror book from the minds of Eisner Award-winner JORDIE BELLAIRE (PRETTY DEADLY, Vision, Batman) and critically acclaimed artist VANESA R. DEL REY (ZERO, Scarlet Witch, Constantine) brings you to the sleepy, sunny town of Redlands, Florida. The police are failing to maintain control of their old-fashioned town, and a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from them. This summer, hide your bibles. — Image Comics

You don’t want to be on the bad side of these witches. They’re coming to snatch wigs, prayers, and government jobs.

Nobody can save Redlands now. Or maybe these witches will be doing the saving?

Like Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben once said, “with great power must come great responsibility,” and that’s something you should be aware of when you pick up Chip Zdarsky’s Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1. You must willing to take responsible of the silliness you will read.

Shirtless Bear-Fighter is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. But it’s the kind of ridiculous that will have you laughing because of how absurd and weirdly mesmerizing the titular Shirtless Bear Fighter is.

In May, I attended my first Free Comic Book Day, and it was quite an experience that I would love to repeat again. The people, the love for comics, I loved it. Part of Free Comic Book Day meant that they were giving a bag of free comics you can take home with you. I managed to grab a couple of issues before they ran out, and the comics that were aimed for a younger audience were my favorite.

Do “steampunk” and “Kaijus” peak your interest? If so, well, you can join me in flailing about an awesome comic that’s out on Wednesday— it’s called Monstress!

When I heard Monstress was announced back in January, I knew this was gonna be a comic I would absolutely love. You have women of color writing and illustrating; gorgeous art; monsters; all types of female characters who are tough and layered; and so much more. I was beyond excited when I saw a solicitation email about it. (Imagine a lot of disbelief gawking of the email and refreshing the page to make sure I wasn’t imagining it.)

Monstress is described as:

Set in an alternate 1900’s Asia, Monstress tells the story of a teenage girl who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power…a connection that will transform them both, and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers…

Your reaction reading that better be, “holy shit, I want to read this.”
